Margaret Controversy:
Elise: Yes, I think Margaret Sanger was a racist who believed in Eugenicists. According to the article it stated, "Some African Americans believed that Sanger's motive was not to aid black women but to eliminate future black generations". And also according to the video she stated, "That she didn't want to answer the last question" in my opinion this makes me think that she isn't being truthful. |
Born in 1879, Margaret Sanger was a persistent women who refused to give up her perception of sexual freedom until it was accomplished. Sanger struggled to bring contraceptive devices to women in her early years, but soon she had her "magic pill", out for everyday women. With her new way of birth-control, Sanger put an end to, "five dollar alley abortions", and gave women more freedom with their bodies. She later created the Planned Parenthood Federation, and continued to help women with unwanted pregnancy. Sanger's resilience still thrives in our society today, and women continue to use her "magic pill".
Margaret Controversy:
Yasser: I believe that Sanger may have supported eugenics at one point, early in her life, and she even used birth control to limit some births. However, later on she seems to have changed her opinion to be more sensitive to the lives of others. According to the KPBS article, Margaret Sanger publicly stated that "birth control is nothing more or less than the facilitation of the process of weeding out the unfit [and] of preventing the birth of defectives. Such words may lead you to believe she is racist, but when given the primary source in the interview with Mike Wallace, Sanger moves on to speak about personal pain, and why she wants to alleviate the pain for other women. She was sent to jail 7 times, and been through tons of abuse. This must have changed her opinion greatly. |
